“Good day sunshine, ba da dum, good day sunshine…” I love the opening line of this Beatle’s song where it says, “I need to laugh, and when the sun is out, I’ve got something I can laugh about.” Why do you think so many artists have crafted such cheerful lyrics to put us in a good mood? In the musical “Bye, Bye Birdie” they sing that, “gray skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face.” In the classic “Mary Poppins” she sings that “just a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down.” I don’t even know what that means but it’s got to be cheerful because cartoon birds come and sit on her finger and sing along! It would lead me to believe that there must be some value in seeking happiness.
But happiness is frequently under siege. Do we recognize the dangers of foreboding thoughts and the tricks the devil uses to try to ruin our day to day? It’s easy to allow our circumstances and fears to control us. The spiritual forces around us that aim to destroy our joy are nagging and persistent. I recently heard Pastor Tiffany preach about how much more patient the devil is than we are. After battling negativity for so long it can easily leave us beat up and weary.
“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” – Isaiah 40:31
Even at our lowest, God calls for us to cling to hope! Heaven is waiting for us! Once we have accepted that beautiful sacrifice of Jesus as our salvation then our happily ever after is already written. That’s why the devil looks to attack wherever possible. He wants to take away our today because he already knows that tomorrow he loses. Our victory is in the resurrection! What are the things that keep us from rejoicing in and accepting Christ’s gift for us?
I’ve always tried to be a glass half full person. My rose-colored glasses are especially attuned to finding silver linings. God created an elaborate world full of many incredible details, all so we could see His majesty and know Him intimately. What tempts us then to sometimes look for proof that the flat earth is crumbling; All the beautiful details God created skewed and tainted by pessimism and doubt. Instead of appreciating the beauty of the flower blossom the focus is on the fact that the blossom is only temporary and soon will wilt. In efforts to steal, kill and destroy the devil gets us so caught up in the fears anxieties of what might be that we completely miss the blessings of what currently is.
“Who among you by worrying can add a single moment to your life?” – Matthew 6:27
Our creator, on the other hand, wants us to enjoy our lives. God continually gives us gift after gift and blessing after blessing. Through our environment, through our loved ones, through the Holy Spirit, God provides us every opportunity to worship and praise. True, the powers of darkness can be strong and persuasive. There will always be moments, days, hurdles that trip us up. However, God has given us everything we need to not live long in the snare of negativity and we can truly enjoy the good day sunshine.
