“Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak but He is strong

Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak but He is strong

Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes Jesus loves me,
for the Bible tells me so.”

Siblings in Christ, as so many of you, I learned this song when I was but a toddler. I learned this song in a church that raised me to believe the lyric in this song; I was raised a United Methodist.

A cradle Methodist, I was baptized as an infant in the United Methodist Church by my Great Uncle Paul Boyer, an Elder in the UMC. I was grounded to renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness and reject the evil powers of this world. I was educated to accept the freedom and power God gives me to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves. I was illuminated to confess Jesus Christ as my Savior, put my whole trust in his grace, and I was entrusted to serve him as my Lord in the union with the church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, races, marital status, and sexual identity.

I was cared for by my mother and father in which upon my baptism were asked to nurture me in Christ’s holy church, and by their teaching and example they might guide me to accept God’s grace for myself, profess my faith openly and to lead me to a Christian life.

I was guided by my church, in which upon my baptism, promised that, with the help of God, they would proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ; surrounding me with a community of love and forgiveness, that I may grow my trust of God, and be found faithful in my service to others.

Upon water being dripped over my head I was incorporated by the Holy Spirit into God’s new creation and made to share in Christ’s royal priesthood. I was welcomed with joy and thanksgiving as a member of the family of Christ.

Consequent to my Confirmation of my faith I confirmed that the Holy Spirit work within me, that having been born through water and the Spirit, I may live a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.

Henceforth, this is what I know.

“Jesus loves you this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
We are weak but He is strong

Jesus loves you this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
We are weak but He is strong

Yes, Jesus loves you
Yes, Jesus loves you
Yes Jesus loves you,
for the Bible tells me so

Jesus loves you still today,
Walking with you on your way
Wanting as a friend to give
Light and love to all who live

Yes, Jesus loves you
Yes, Jesus loves you
Yes Jesus loves you,
for the Bible tells me so

Jesus loves you He will stay
Close besides you all the way
Thou has bled and died for you
We will henceforth live for Thee

Yes, Jesus loves us
Yes, Jesus loves us
Yes Jesus loves us,
for the Bible tells us so.”
