1st Thessalonians 1:1-10
Thoughts for reflection: Worshiping idols would have been a common practice for the non-Jewish citizens of Thessalonica who were now a part of this church. They would have had gods or idols for most every part of their lives which they would have worshiped for positive outcomes. They would have had gods of the harvest for good crops, gods of the weather to control flooding, and so on. The struggle was real for them in leaving these old gods behind and now placing their faith in the one true God revealed to them, and us, in Jesus Christ.
What “old gods” do you have a hard time leaving behind? What are the things you turn to that provide you with feelings of safety, security, protection, or control during times of difficulty or fear? What can you do to leave these “false idols” behind?
